THE WORK OF THE HOLY SPIRIT.
Actually , if I should try to treat exhaustively all the works of the Holy spirit in one message, it is like trying to tell you all that God the Father does in a single message. It is impossible!!! However, the Holy spirit does extensive works in the area of our salvation , sanctification and service unto the Lord, which is what i will try to briefly look into here and now. How do we know that Holy spirit is at work in our lives???. Ignorance is the ruin of many. That is why God said..... My people are destroyed for lack of knowledge:........(Hosea 4:6 KJV). And so, in many places today, people think the Holy spirit is at work in a person or place, when in actual sense, He is being provoked there. " These be they who separate themselves, sensual, having not the Spirit. (Jude 1:19 KJV). An unclean, worldly, adulterous profane person cannot be in the Holy Spirit-he or she can be in another spirit anyway. If you separate yourself from the people of God and you are not living a consistent Christian life and then you say you are in the spirit, you are deceived, indeed blasphemous !!!. " Even the Spirit of truth; whom the world cannot receive, because it seeth him not, neither knoweth him: but ye know him; for he dwelleth with you, and shall be in you. (John 14:17 KJV). The world cannot receive the Holy spirit.
What are the works of the spirit of God?
(1). It is the spirit of God that convicts a sinner of his sin:" Nevertheless I tell you the truth; It is expedient for you that I go away: for if I go not away, the Comforter will not come unto you; but if I depart, I will send him unto you. And when he is come, he will reprove the world of sin, and of righteousness, and of judgment: (John 16:7, 8 KJV). It is that quickening , that conviction , that shame, guilt, and condemnation coming within a sinner that leads him to repentance. And it is the work of the spirit of God. Then, the sinner begin to pray and asking for forgiveness of his sins.
(2). We are born again by the spirit of God: " Jesus answered, Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except a man be born of water and of the Spirit, he cannot enter into the kingdom of God. (John 3:5 KJV). That which is born of the flesh is flesh, that which is born of the spirit is spirit. It is the spirit of God that regenerates and renews a man and a woman, making him or her a new creature.
(3). We are enlightened by the spirit of God: " Now we have received, not the spirit of the world, but the spirit which is of God; that we might know the things that are freely given to us of God. (1 Corinthians 2:12 KJV). It is the spirit of God that opens our spiritual eyes while we read the word of God and shows us what belongs to us. And when you are praying and the Lord has answered your prayer, though you have not seem it, it is the spirit of God that tells you that it is done. (4). The spirit of God bears witness with our hearts; " The Spirit itself beareth witness with our spirit, that we are the children of God: (Romans 8:16 KJV). Sometimes the devil will come to cause a believer, and say " do you think you are a child of God ? Do you think your name is written in the book of life?. " And then, very gently, the spirit of God will bear witness, assuring you that you are now a child of God.
(5). It helps us to mortify the works of the flesh: " For if ye live after the flesh, ye shall die: but if ye through the Spirit do mortify the deeds of the body, ye shall live. (Romans 8:13 KJV). The spirit divinely prepares us to overcome temptations.
(6). It is the spirit of God that helps us to take right decision in life. " For as many as are led by the Spirit of God, they are the sons of God. (Romans 8:14 KJV).
(7). It is the spirit that reveals the heavenly father unto us: " And because ye are sons, God hath sent forth the Spirit of his Son into your hearts, crying, Abba, Father. (Galatians 4:6 KJV). It makes you to know of God's mercy, of His love, of His compassion and of all the wonderful attributes of God.
(8). He teaches us : " Which things also we speak, not in the words which man's wisdom teacheth, but which the Holy Ghost teacheth; comparing spiritual things with spiritual. (1 Corinthians 2:13 KJV).
(9). He guides us into all truth: " Howbeit when he, the Spirit of truth, is come, he will guide you into all truth: for he shall not speak of himself; but whatsoever he shall hear, that shall he speak: and he will shew you things to come. (John 16:13 KJV). If you have the spirit of God, you will not be led into error.
(10). He reminds us of the appropriate word of God at critical times: " But the Comforter, which is the Holy Ghost, whom the Father will send in my name, he shall teach you all things, and bring all things to your remembrance, whatsoever I have said unto you. (John 14:26 KJV).
(11). He transforms us into the image of Christ: " But we all, with open face beholding as in a glass the glory of the Lord, are changed into the same image from glory to glory, even as by the Spirit of the Lord. (2 Corinthians 3:18 KJV).
(12). He leads us and moves us into sanctification : " But we are bound to give thanks alway to God for you, brethren beloved of the Lord, because God hath from the beginning chosen you to salvation through sanctification of the Spirit and belief of the truth: (2 Thessalonians 2:13 KJV).
He strengthens us in the inner man: " That he would grant you, according to the riches of his glory, to be strengthened with might by his Spirit in the inner man; (Ephesians 3:16 KJV).
(14). The spirit of God comforts us : " But when the Comforter is come, whom I will send unto you from the Father, even the Spirit of truth, which proceedeth from the Father, he shall testify of me: (John 15:26 KJV).
(15). He brings forth fruit in our lives: " But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith, Meekness, temperance: against such there is no law. (Galatians 5:22, 23 KJV).
(16). The spirit of God empowers us for effective service : " But ye shall receive power, after that the Holy Ghost is come upon you: and ye shall be witnesses unto me both in Jerusalem, and in all Judæa, and in Samaria, and unto the uttermost part of the earth. (Acts 1:8 KJV).
