SLOW TO ANGER?

  • People do a lot of bad or irritating things. I've even worked with people who take delight in starting debates & arguments, & love to just plain irritate people. I've also seen professing christians get very angry, irritable & short-tempered very quickly & frequently over almost nothing. That has made me examine myself for these attitudes & what the Bible says.

As christians, we should always strive to be slow to anger & argue. (Jas 1:19  Wherefore, my beloved brethren, let every man be swift to hear, slow to speak, slow to wrath) Do we bridle our tongue as we should? (Jas 1:26  If any man among you seem to be religious, and bridleth not his tongue, but deceiveth his own heart, this man's religion is vain)

We should love, pray for, & forgive others.  (Mat 5:44  But I say unto you, Love your enemies, bless them that curse you, do good to them that hate you, and pray for them which despitefully use you, and persecute you;) (Col 3:12-13  Put on therefore, as the elect of God, holy and beloved, bowels of mercies, kindness, humbleness of mind, meekness, longsuffering; forbearing one another, and forgiving one another, if any man have a quarrel against any: even as Christ forgave you, so also do ye.)

Do we walk in the Spirit & demonstrate fruit? (Gal 5:22-26  But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith, meekness, temperance: against such there is no law. And they that are Christ's have crucified the flesh with the affections and lusts. If we live in the Spirit, let us also walk in the Spirit. Let us not be desirous of vain glory, provoking one another, envying one another.)

How quickly do we let others provoke us to anger? (Psa 119:165  Great peace have they which love thy law: and nothing shall offend them.) Do we murmer & argue? (Php 2:14-15  Do all things without murmurings and disputings: that ye may be blameless and harmless, the sons of God, without rebuke, in the midst of a crooked and perverse nation, among whom ye shine as lights in the world;)

Teachings on curses & spiritual warfare are helpful. Also, here are some other verses I find helpful. Eph 4:31-32  Let all bitterness, and wrath, and anger, and clamour, and evil speaking, be put away from you, with all malice: and be ye kind one to another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, even as God for Christ's sake hath forgiven you.Jas 3:17-18  But the wisdom that is from above is first pure, then peaceable, gentle, and easy to be intreated, full of mercy and good fruits, without partiality, and without hypocrisy. And the fruit of righteousness is sown in peace of them that make peace. Mat 5:22  But I say unto you, That whosoever is angry with his brother without a cause shall be in danger of the judgment: and whosoever shall say to his brother, Raca, shall be in danger of the council: but whosoever shall say, Thou fool, shall be in danger of hell fire.

Besides, anger & stress have very real effects on our body, which is the temple of God. Some say stress increases our adrenal gland activity & that adrenal hormones (androgens & cortisol) when abnormally elevated can cause us to get acne, gain weight & lose our hair!!
