DON’T DROP THE BALL
We know the story of Joseph – Jacob’s
favorite son, sold into slavery by his jealous brothers, served
Potiphar, imprisoned unjustly, and eventually glorified. Genesis 41:
39-45, “And Pharaoh said unto Joseph … there is none so discreet and
wise as thou art: Thou shalt be over my house, and according unto thy
word shall all my people be ruled: only in the throne will I be greater
than thou … See, I have set thee over all the land of Egypt. And Pharaoh
took off his ring from his hand, and put it upon Joseph's hand, and
arrayed him in vestures of fine linen, and put a gold chain about his
neck; And he made him to ride in the second chariot which he had; and
they cried before him, Bow the knee: and he made him ruler over all the
land of Egypt. And Pharaoh said unto Joseph, … without thee shall no man
lift up his hand or foot in all the land of Egypt. And Pharaoh … gave
him to wife Asenath the daughter of Potipherah… And Joseph went out over
all the land of Egypt.” Joseph was very great in Egypt. In fact, his
greatness earned his family the best part of the land (Genesis 47:6) and
a great honor to Jacob when he died (Genesis 50:3-11). Joseph died a
very successful man in every respect. Centuries after Joseph died we
still read about him, and his story has encouraged many to stand for God
and righteousness even if that would mean suffering unjustly for a
Now, Exodus 1:8 says, “Now there arose up a new king over
Egypt, which knew not Joseph”. How could there arise a king over Egypt
who did not know Joseph? Did he not grow up in Egypt? Could it be that
he heard about Joseph but could not be “bothered” with him? Does the
fact that this king did not know Joseph mean that someone somewhere who
was supposed to pass history down failed in his/her duty? There arose a
king over Egypt who did not know Joseph. As a result of not
knowing/caring about Joseph and the great deliverance God brought to the
Egyptians through him, this king made the children of Israel miserable.
Now we know that all things work together for good to those who love
God (Romans 8:28). If there never arose a king who dealt wickedly with
God’s people they would have remained comfortable in a foreign land. How
then would God fulfill the promise He made to Abraham in Genesis 12:7?
However, we want to look at this from a different angle.
We are born
again, filled with the Spirit of God and having a good time living for
and serving Him. We cherish His presence so much that we would sacrifice
anything just to be with Him. We are experiencing His goodness, mercy,
blessings, peace, joy, etc. We know a whole lot about Him through the
study of the scriptures, prayer, revelations, etc. However, from the way
we are handling the spiritual life of both our biological and spiritual
children, is there a chance that there will come a time when it would
be reported that there arose among our descendants people who do not
know this same Jesus that we are crazy about? Are we teaching and
encouraging our children/followers to know and follow the Lord like we
are doing (1st Corinthians 11:1)? If yes, are we also helping them to
understand the importance of passing to their own children the knowledge
that we are passing to them? Paul said in 2nd Timothy 2:2, “And the
things that thou hast heard of me among many witnesses, the same commit
thou to faithful men, who shall be able to teach others also.” Are we
doing just this or are we like Job’s friends whom he spoke about in Job
12:2, “No doubt but ye are the people, and wisdom shall die with you.”
The things that the Lord is exposing to you, are you feeding them to
others or hoarding them? If God suddenly calls you home, what will
happen to the revelations, wisdom, knowledge, strategies, etc. you
possess – will they die with you or are you bringing up people who can
practice and effectively pass them on to others? Will your craze for
Jesus die with you or are you rubbing it off on others around you? Think
about it and change your ways if you need to.
If on the other hand
you are among those who did their best to bring up children in the way
of the Lord but have watched “helplessly” as those children turned
against the Lord and the Word on which you brought them up, do not fret.
Proverbs 22:6 says, “Train up a child in the way he should go: and when
he is old, he will not depart from it” and we understand from Titus 1:2
that God cannot lie. Keep praying for those children and leave God to
decide how and when to restore them.
You have a duty to transfer the knowledge of God from one generation to another
The world may not know you or recognize you; you may be rejected and live under
heavy jealousy. Remember that, the Lord who rescues the Israelites from that wicked
king is still present to do the same. You are precious in His hands, He will send another
Moses to them you; only hold on to him and be willing to obey His commands.
. Don’t drop the ball.
